Communication from Superintendent McNulty
Smithville ISD releases a letter to parents and staffNovember 6, 2013 (Posted Nov. 7, 2013)
Dear Parents and Staff,
We continue to move forward through the challenges of last week in dealing with the loss of a student and then the loss of a teacher. Healing takes time and time is often not something we want to give. I want to assure you that my focus is on the safety of our students and staff. We know and believe that parents are our students’ first teachers and the pillars that ground our children in dealing with what life presents to us all. SISD shares your concerns for the safety and well-being of your children. That shared responsibility calls for us to work together.
How do we move forward? We will continue to provide grief, post-traumatic stress, and post-suicide counseling to the students and staff that have been affected by these tragedies. Although our staff receives training in suicide prevention and crisis management before and during the school year, we will be providing more training related to those areas. I have met with our law enforcement and asked that they increase their presence in and around the school. We will be meeting with parents to discuss suicide prevention, post-suicide intervention and responding to a crisis. I have asked a recognized suicide and post-suicide intervention expert, Ms. Marilee Kellar, from Texas Youth Suicide Prevention Council, to work with all of us as we plan to meet and discuss with parents and community members how we move forward. The Texas School Safety Center will be working with us as we review our crisis and post-crisis action plans. We are continually updating the school district website (www.smithvilleisd.org) with resources for parents and staff. I am proud of the manner in which our students, staff, parents, and community are working together and have determined to move forward for the well-being of all of our students. Resilience is present wherever I go and evident in everyone I meet in Smithville.
Rock McNulty, Ed.D.
