Mirabeau Lamar Excellence in Teaching Award

Teachers from each SISD campus were chosen and recognized by their peers with the Mirabeau Lamar Excellence in Teaching Award on May 23 at the W.J. Nixon Masonic Lodge No. 421. Chosen were 2nd Grade Teacher Brande Natal, Brown Primary; Special Education teacher Sara Peterson, Smithville Elementary; 8th Grade Science teacher Amanda Gommert, Smithville Junior High; and 9th Grade English teacher Jennifer Edwards, Smithville High School.

Each teacher received a certificate and a medallion during the ceremony at the Masonic Lodge, in front of members of the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star, their peers, school officials and family members.

Supt. Dr. Rock McNulty spoke on reasons these teachers, including Mrs. Peterson, were chosen by their peers.

“Mrs. Peterson has worked for Smithville ISD for 12 years,” he said. “She coaches Special Olympics. She goes above and beyond to help others and meet the needs of all students. Mrs. Peterson demonstrates to all how to love children. She has served Smithville ISD in multiple roles and continues to grow professionally and encourages others to do so.”

The teachers received a standing ovation from attendees. The award is sponsored by the Masons.
